Most everyone who walked by Ms. Trellis’s office on Monday did a double- and sometimes triple-take when they observed a prim, demure young woman sitting at Dethany’s desk wearing a modest sweater, a skirt, a big hair bow out of “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and no piercings whatsoever. The jarring vision was Dethany, of course, like we’d never seen her before.
She’s been house-hunting, and was rejected for a loan even though she has excellent credit. She assumed it was based entirely on her appearance, so for a meeting with another loan company she took on this alter ego. The Goth unicorn would have been less of a surprise.
Art told me later that Wendy had accompanied her out of the building, only to be accosted by Dethany’s ex-boyfriend Syd. It was he who had convinced her to dress that way in college, which she did for a period of time. She eventually realized that he was a control freak who simply liked to wield power over her, and she broke it off and went back to her “normal” way of dressing.
Seeing him, she realized she was once again ceding personal control to an outside entity. She went to the meeting in her Goth regalia, and emerged with her loan. The closing on the house is at the end of March.
